The Muskoka region in Canada is widely known as the "Hamptons of the North" due to its rugged, idyllic natural setting and expansive properties.

Balancing pragmatism and innovation, the clients—entrepreneurs and long-time residents—sought to create a legacy project for their family and friends. They identified the Northstar early on as the social hub of the property, the place where everyone wants to be during the day.

From May to September, life at the cottage revolves around the water The form arose out of a detailed study of the user needs, the particular underwater rock conditions and the restrictive zoning regulations.

The kinetic facades seamlessly transform the space from a secure storage facility to an open multi-use space. The carefully designed steel structure allows the second-floor living spaces to float delicately above the water. The materials are chosen for their durability to withstand excessive water and extreme temperatures, whilst preserving the desired light and open aesthetic.

We've created the anti-boathouse, setting itself apart from the ubiquitous cookie-cutter, dark boxes that dot the lakefronts.
